The Language and Translation Center

Ever since its inception as the Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies (中華佛學研究所) founded in 1985, our Institute has regarded the study of languages as a crucial part of any serious engagement with Buddhist thought and history. The Institute's department of Buddhist Studies has continued this tradition by placing the study of both scriptural languages (Sanskrit, Pāli, Tibetan, and classical Chinese) and research languages (English and Japanese) at the center of its bachelor’s, master's, and doctoral programs.

The center endeavors to promote language study as well as translation training through various extracurricular activities (language competitions, English corner, book reviews, etc.) and long-term projects, such as the Tibetan Tripitaka translation program. As part of its missions, the Center also takes on the translation into Chinese of books relevant to the study of Buddhist thought, practices, and scriptural languages.
